Choosing a Baby Towel

When buying a baby towel there are plenty of choices, so what are the important things to look out for when deciding which baby towel is best for your little one and you?

Warmth

Keeping baby warm after bathtime and speedy drying are two of the key things to look out for when choosing a baby towel. Babies lose heat very quickly so having a hood on the towel is important to keep the warmth in. The hood is often sewn into one of the corners and is easy to put on your little one. Babies (just like the rest of us!) lose most of their heat through their heads, so once baby is out of the bath make sure to put the hood on especially after hair washing.

Material

Natural cotton towelling is very absorbent and stays soft (when washed and dried correctly – we use a non-bio and a gentle fabric conditioner followed by tumble drying). Doctors & paediatricians generally recommend patting your little one dry rather than rubbing so absorbency is doubly important. Cotton velour towelling has a very thick and soft nap which gives it a luxurious feel  which makes it great for really little ones as its both super absorbent and super soft.

Size

Baby towels come in a range of sizes, so choose one that is just right for your little one, too big and there will be folds of material dangling down which can be a pain to deal with and can possibly cause you to trip up, too small and  you won’t be able to wrap you little one up properly to keep the warmth in.

Bath Towels for Toddlers

Toddlers can either love or hate bathtime (and this can vary from day to day!).  As well as having toys in the bath to play with,  a brightly coloured towel with something else to amuse your little one can make all the difference between happy, fun bathtime and the nightmare tears and tantrums.  Animal shaped hoods, for example can be the source of plenty of fun for your toddler as they can pretend to be a rabbit, frog or a hippo. You can even make up stories about the animal whilst drying your little one.

Keep the towel close by you

Make sure that you have the baby towel easily to hand before you start bathtime; it’s great if you've managed to warm the towel just a little bit before you begin. Some baby towels can fasten around your neck like an apron so the towel is always ready for when you want to lift your little one out of the bath – or when you need to quickly dry their eyes after hair washing. With an apron style towel, be sure to fasten it before you begin, holding a slippery wet baby whilst reaching for a towel is a recipe for disaster. Having the towel round your neck will also go a long way to keep you dry when the splashing becomes a bit too enthusiastic!!

Poncho Towels

Keeping your little one warm after a dip in the sea or pool is just as important as after bathtime and a hooded poncho towel is ideal. A poncho towel quickly slips over your little one`s head and should be designed so that it won’t come off too easily. Poncho towels cover your baby`s front, back and head and so help keep the warmth in and protect them from draughts. They are made from absorbent cotton towelling which will help with drying your little one. Poncho towels in bright cheerful colours are fun to wear – excellent for style conscious toddlers!
