Baby Gift Ideas
As parents ourselves, we've been given gifts at various times for our children. Many, many gifts are given at the birth of a child, particularly the first child and if that child also happens to be a first grandchild, then often there's so many gifts that it's difficult to keep track of them all.
But what are the best gifts to give parents of a newborn baby? What is it that parents would really appreciate the most?
For us, the best things we were given were the practical things that we could use every day. We were given some really beautiful little dresses for our daughters and loads of soft toys but in reality these things were rarely if ever used. Dressing up a newborn baby in a dress is just too much hassle except on very special occasions and certainly our daughters have piles of soft toys but actually have only one favourite toy each and it's such a lottery whether a particular toy becomes a favourite or is left on the shelf!
The best things we were given, things that we got real value and use out of were the things we use every day and still use today, 2 years after the birth of our second daughter and 4 years after the birth of our first daughter. We really appreciated getting some nice towels, these still look pretty good after years of going through the washing machine and continue to be used every day.
The other thing we were given was a really nice changing bag which lasted a good 2 years before it finally fell apart and had to be replaced but it took a lot of abuse being thrown in the back of the car, carried in all weathers and as parents we know that the changing bag goes everywhere so they have a hard life.
Even something as simple as a pack of really nice, colourful bibs, used every day and just so practical makes a great gift and not too expensive. We think the key thing about giving these kinds of gift is that we remember who gave them to us and appreciate their thoughtfulness.
Gifts for the parents of slightly older children could include, a top quality high chair, we have a lovely wooden high chair, it's lasted years and still looks great. It was bought for our eldest daughter to use but is still in use with our youngest daughter.
And what about holiday gifts, if the family is going on holiday and you want to buy something, again it's the practical things that will be used - poncho towels are great at the seaside or by the pool or maybe a little rucksack so that the child can carry a few things by themselves, just make sure that it has a rein attached so you can keep tabs on your little ones. And for the summertime in the garden, a nice big play mat that doubles as a picnic blanket is great.
The best gifts we were bought and the things that got the most use and were most appreciated were the practical everyday items that were well made and have lasted for years.
